How to Make Claude Research Like a PhD in 5 Minutes

When you ask Claude "tell me about X" you get the majority view. The most common framing. The surface-level answer that everyone else is also getting. What you do not get is the practitioner who works with that topic every day, the skeptic who thinks the mainstream view is wrong, the economist who follows the money, the historian who has seen the pattern before, or the academic who actually read the studies.
Those five perspectives all see different things. And that is exactly what a PhD student does when they research a topic. They do not ask one question. They ask from multiple angles, map the contradictions, synthesize the findings, and then critique their own work.
Stanford built a research system called STORM that does exactly this. It was published at NAACL 2024 by the Stanford OVAL Lab. In peer-reviewed testing, articles built from multiple perspectives were 25% more organized and 10% broader in coverage than articles built the normal way. The system is open source and free at storm.genie.stanford.edu.
But here is the real prize. You do not need the software. You do not need GitHub. The Stanford method is just a way of thinking and you can run the exact same approach inside Claude with 4 prompts. Five minutes from start to finish. Here are all 4 prompts with exactly how to use them.
WHY ONE PROMPT ALWAYS FAILS
When you ask Claude a single question you get one perspective. The most common take. The surface. What you miss is everything that lives underneath.
A practitioner who works with the topic daily sees practical realities that academics miss. A skeptic sees the weaknesses in the mainstream argument that proponents conveniently ignore. An economist sees the financial incentives shaping the research that everyone else takes at face value. A historian sees the patterns that have played out before in similar situations. An academic sees the peer-reviewed evidence that contradicts popular belief.
Each of those five voices catches something the others miss. A single prompt cannot do this because it has no reason to argue with itself. It gives you the consensus view and stops. The multi-perspective approach forces Claude to generate tension between viewpoints and that tension is where real understanding lives.
PROMPT 1: THE MULTI-PERSPECTIVE SCAN (60 SECONDS)
This is the heart of the entire method. Open Claude and paste this prompt. Replace the topic on the first line with whatever you are researching.
"I need to research [YOUR TOPIC].
Simulate 5 different expert perspectives on this topic:
- THE PRACTITIONER: works with this daily. What do they know that academics miss? What practical realities are usually ignored?
- THE ACADEMIC: has studied this for years. What does the peer-reviewed evidence actually say? Where does the evidence contradict popular belief?
- THE SKEPTIC: thinks the mainstream view is wrong. What is the strongest counterargument? What evidence do proponents conveniently ignore?
- THE ECONOMIST: follows the money. Who profits from the current narrative? What financial incentives shape the research?
- THE HISTORIAN: has seen similar patterns before. What historical parallels exist? What can we learn from how those played out?
For each perspective give me: Their core position in 2 sentences. The strongest evidence supporting their view. The one thing they would tell me that no other perspective would."
What comes back: Five very different reads of the same topic. The practitioner sees what the academic misses. The skeptic challenges what the practitioner assumes. The economist exposes incentives the academic ignores. The historian provides patterns the economist cannot see.
This is 60 seconds of work that catches what one prompt never finds.
PROMPT 2: THE CONTRADICTION MAP (60 SECONDS)
Now you make Claude find where the 5 perspectives fight. The contradictions are where the real understanding lives because that is where the comfortable consensus breaks down.
Stay in the same conversation and paste this:
"Based on the 5 perspectives above, map the contradictions:
- Where do two or more perspectives directly contradict each other? List each conflict with the specific claims that clash.
- Which perspective has the strongest evidence? Which has the weakest? Why?
- What is the one question that, if answered, would resolve the biggest contradiction?
- What does EVERY perspective agree on? This is likely true because even opponents confirm it.
- What topic did NONE of the perspectives address? This is the blind spot in the whole field and it is often the most valuable finding."
What comes back: A map of where experts disagree and why. Most people skip this step. It is the step that separates surface understanding from real expertise.
The two most valuable parts of this output are number 4 and number 5. If all five perspectives agree on something despite disagreeing on everything else, that thing is almost certainly true. And if none of the five perspectives addressed a topic, you just found the gap in the entire field. That gap is often where the most original thinking lives and where nobody else is looking.
PROMPT 3: THE SYNTHESIS (90 SECONDS)
Now you pull everything together into a research briefing that no single expert could write because it accounts for every angle.
Stay in the same conversation and paste this:
"Synthesize everything from the 5 perspectives and the contradiction map into a research briefing:
- THE ONE-PARAGRAPH SUMMARY: Explain this topic as if briefing a CEO who has 60 seconds and needs nuance, not just the headline.
- THE 5 KEY FINDINGS: The most important things I now know, ranked by reliability. For each finding, note which perspectives support it and which challenge it.
- THE HIDDEN CONNECTION: One non-obvious link between findings that only shows up when you look at all 5 perspectives together.
- THE ACTIONABLE INSIGHT: Based on all the evidence, what should someone in [YOUR ROLE or SITUATION] actually DO differently? Be specific.
- THE FRONTIER QUESTION: The one question that, if answered, would change everything about how we understand this topic."
Replace [YOUR ROLE or SITUATION] with whatever applies to you. If you are a founder researching a market, say "a founder entering this market." If you are a student writing a paper, say "a graduate student writing a thesis on this." If you are an investor, say "an investor evaluating this space." The more specific you are about your role the more actionable the insight in section 4 will be.
What comes back: A briefing that accounts for every angle, names the contradictions, ranks findings by reliability, and lands on a specific action. This is what a PhD student would produce after 48 hours of reading. You just got it in 90 seconds.
PROMPT 4: THE PEER REVIEW (60 SECONDS)
STORM has one known weakness that Stanford's own researchers flagged. The system does not self-critique. Source bias and fact misassociation can sneak in without anyone catching them. This prompt fixes that by making Claude grade its own work.
Stay in the same conversation and paste this:
"Now peer review your own research briefing:
- CONFIDENCE SCORES: Rate each of the 5 key findings on a 1 to 10 scale for reliability. Explain each score.
- WEAKEST LINK: Which claim are you least confident in? What specific information would you need to verify it?
- BIAS CHECK: Which perspective might be overrepresented in your synthesis? Did one voice dominate the findings?
- MISSING PERSPECTIVE: Is there a 6th angle I should have included that would change the conclusions?
- OVERALL GRADE: If a Stanford professor reviewed this briefing, what grade would they give and why? What would they tell me to fix?"
What comes back: An honest assessment of the research you just produced. Which claims are strong. Which are weak. Where bias crept in. What angle is missing. Real peer review takes months in academia. You just did a version of it in 60 seconds.
The confidence scores are especially useful. If a finding scores a 9 out of 10 you can cite it with confidence. If it scores a 4 you know to verify it independently before relying on it. This step turns a wall of information into something you can actually trust and act on.
THE 5-MINUTE WORKFLOW
Minute 1: Run Prompt 1. You have 5 expert perspectives with evidence and unique insights from each.
Minutes 2 to 3: Run Prompt 2. You have a contradiction map showing where experts fight, what everyone agrees on, and the blind spot nobody addressed.
Minutes 3 to 4: Run Prompt 3. You have a full research briefing with ranked findings, a hidden connection, and a specific action to take.
Minute 5: Run Prompt 4. You know which findings are reliable, which are weak, where bias crept in, and what a professor would tell you to fix.
Total time: 5 minutes. Output: a multi-perspective research briefing with contradiction analysis, synthesis, actionable insight, and reliability scores.
7 WAYS TO USE THIS STARTING TODAY
Before writing any article or report. Run all 4 prompts on your topic. Your piece will cover angles nobody else thought of because most writers only research from one perspective.
Before a major business decision. Get all 5 perspectives. The practitioner tells you what works in reality. The skeptic tells you what could go wrong. The economist tells you who profits from the current narrative and whether their incentives align with yours.
Before a job interview. Research the company from 5 angles in 5 minutes. The practitioner view gives you insider language. The skeptic view gives you sharp questions to ask. You walk in more prepared than anyone else in the room.
Before investing. Bull case, bear case, historical parallel, incentive map, academic evidence. All in 5 minutes. The contradiction map shows you where the actual risk lives, not where people say it lives.
Before learning a new skill. Map the field from 5 angles. The practitioner tells you what to learn first. The academic tells you the foundational theory. The skeptic tells you what is overhyped. You skip the noise and focus on what matters.
Before a negotiation. Research the other side from 5 perspectives. Understand their incentives, their weaknesses, and their historical behavior. You walk in with structural advantage because you understand their position better than they think you do.
Before any presentation. Run all 4 prompts on your topic. Your slides will answer objections before the audience raises them. Your Q and A will feel effortless because you already explored every counterargument.
TIPS FOR BETTER RESULTS
Be specific with your topic. "AI" is too broad. "The impact of AI agents on freelance software development pricing in 2026" gives Claude something concrete to research from multiple angles.
Be specific with your role in Prompt 3. The actionable insight changes dramatically depending on whether you are a founder, an investor, a student, a journalist, or an employee. Tell Claude exactly who you are and what decision you are trying to make.
Save the full output. Copy the entire conversation and save it as a reference document. The 5 perspectives, the contradiction map, the synthesis, and the peer review together form a comprehensive research file you can reference for weeks or months.
Run it twice on important topics. The second run with slightly different topic framing often catches things the first run missed. Compare the two and you have an even more complete picture.
Use Prompt 4 as a checklist. The weakest link and the missing perspective from the peer review are your next research tasks. If the peer review says "you need a regulatory perspective" go back and add that as a 6th expert in Prompt 1 and run the whole thing again. Each pass makes the research tighter.
